the how-do-you-call-me game

People close to me calls me Happy. They really wanna se me smile and I think that Mama called me as such when i was still too young to pronunce my name perfectly. And so my sister was named Honey. And we are Happy & Honey. And as the years passed, Honey was then later on changed to Jenel, and that's what I remembered already, growing up calling my sister Jenel or 'Nel its shortcut form.

Names do matter, I say. The way people pronounce your name and saying it perfectly is worth replying with a gracious smile. I admit. I do not smile a lot and I do not live up with my Happy name. At school, they call me Jack, Jak, Jacky, Jackyboo (its The Worms favorite name-ending sound, more like of a "oo" sound means something scary or exciting, i do not really know, but we usually call each other as Faithy-boo, Ivi-boo, Tiffy-foo, Kara-boo, Bernie-boosh and so on), Jacque, Jocky (it's Bernhard who calls and wrtites my name as such), later on Jaki, and my personal favorite, Jac. And of course i preferred being called as jAc, bias man.

ANyways, there is something about how people spelled and pronunced your name that gives you a hint on how people perceives you to be. Ivi for example calls me "Jacky O". And i felt like she can associate me with fun and that I confirmed. I enjoyed it everytime she puts an Oooo at the end of my name. Jeza on the other hand has this different sound that I could always turn my head whenever she calls me and i get excited. LOL! Bernhard says my name with lust. Hahahaha Joke! is it because you call me after a brief's brand?... kidding Bern!

And here's a trivia, i never heard , not even once, that someone called me Cecille. it's a part of my name but i just really wonder why nobody has ever called me nor asked if they could call me Cecille. I think it's a pretty name that Mama really insisted on puting it after Jaclyn. And now it does not exist. I can't place it on ATM's nor on Credit Cards coz they can only accomodate 14 characters at the maximum. ANd there was a time that I told mama how i hated my name coz it's very common, and you should hear my sister rant about here name coz she already met many people having the same name as her, she's J-e-a-n.

If I could be my mother, I would have named my daughter as Ronica, Demea, Francine, or something celtic and greek. Lagi I know we are Pinoys and we should stick to our roots and culturized Spanish-inspired names...but having a unique name is something also different, right? i once had this schoolmate in college whom we called as "Corp" since he is our corp commander in our CAT. As his Lt. Col., we always do things hand-in-hand, but i really despised him. He mockingly calls me Cecilia and it really annoys me. Actually, I almost killed him after almost a year of stretching my patience and trying to evade him by putting on imaginary ear-plugs. I won the fight. And I think he was far more hurt because aside from the physical pain, I retorted by calling him Shokoy and dropped his name "Alfredo" for a thousand times, if it was a glass, it was grinded to pieces a long time ago. But I already buried those grudges.. Thank God that after that incident, nobody ever dared to do it to me again. "Maldita man gud ka Jak", said Justhin (he was my witness when I almost committed that-supposed-to-be crime of the century).

Jaclyn Cecille Velasco. Do I have a pretty name?
