My sister borrowed a book from their ever updated library (unlike ours during my college days wherein we have to dig for books that we need) and I was wondering why she was so ecstatic.
Without hesitations, she magically opened the book and landed on the page where she read aloud the title, "Today With Kris Aquino". Animatedly, she started reading the first few paragraphs and to my ear's delight I was listening intently. Savoring each word.
“Kwentong Siyudad” is a magical book that tackles about stories that reflects our life, struggles, fantasies, success, failures and what have you (In Memory of Maggienaka).
Published by the Ateneo de Manila University Press, this book of short-stories is mini-skirt in length but bridal in content. It is divided into five parts but due to time constraints and my failing eyes, I just read five stories (3 of it unfinished).
Part V. Naghihingalong Siyudad.
“Today With Kris Aquino” by Rommel Barona Rodriguez really tickles my soul. Owing some experiences in TV Production, I find it very intriguing on how he was able to come up with such kind of structure. It’s just like writing a script. I am not a fan of Kris but I admire her tackless (sic) attitude. Adoniz, the man with a vagina (Adoniz, Ang Lalaking May Hiwa), is not just a ball of yarn that tackles sexual orientation, it is about our confused world. Our yearnings to become what we wanted to be but then are confused because we are not sure of what we really want.
Me? I want to become a lawyer. I had it instilled in my mind. But prior to that, I wanna become a college professor. Hah! But as years passes by and as I embrace new experiences and meet influential people, these thinkings (sic) would surely be tainted. Because we tend to be confused as another good thing pass and filled up by another opportunity which should not have come at that moment.
Precision and timing. This is how we play the game of life. We are all guest of Kris Aquino. We are all judged by her dainty tongue in front of the national television. This is life. And it’s up to us to discover who are the Kris Aquino’s in our life.
Part IV. Siyudad ng Tao.
Talking about people means talking also about myself, yourself, ourselves. Mes de Guzman’s “Da UltraInterMegalaktik Pinoy Hero” is the stereotypical Action-Bida that we saw in our very own movie house during its reign in the 90’s.
The story is about (forgot his name nah—paita oi, I no longer have the 24 hours memory retention). Basta it’s an action-packed story wherein despite the fact that he is outnumbered, with a battalion of goons attacking him equipped with all the high-tech armory gadgets, he is still alive. And even if he fires his gun anywhere, the bullets are self- guided, that it will hit the goon even if he is hiding like a cockroach in the cement crack.
“Wan Man Show”. This is the typical Pinoy Action Film. “Walang Kawala Ang Mga Bala!” And of course the bida here is set to rescue his loved ones from the leader of the goons. A black leather jacket and a moustache. The usual get-up, yah know nah!
I was never a fan of pinoy action movies. They bore me. The same boring plot revolves around the Padilla brothers, Ronie Rickets, Philip Salvador, Bong Revilla, Revilla Senior, Cesar Montano (apil pa ba cya?), and who they are pa...
Of course we can understand the quality coz of low budget but this should not have been used as an excuse. Hay! My floating mind is again wondering in the Desert of Dreams that once I became a film maker.
(I skipped stories in Part III)
Part II. Intramuros Sa Aking Isipan
“Kalatas” is more of "kamangmangan". It's about a story of an orphaned young man living with his grandfather and their survival is on that colors that made Joyce Jimenez alive in our eyes by the higgway. The young man was uneducated. he may not be conversant but he has the eye for details, the hands for painting, the heart of an innocent. And when hes granpa died, after he buried himself to tears, it was time to face the eal world, that he is alone.
Alone in a harsh world.
